The reason silicone seals can shoulder such important responsibilities lies in their unparalleled weather resistance and elasticity. The temperature around a car engine can easily reach several hundred degrees, while outdoor temperatures in northern extreme cold regions can drop to minus forty degrees. Ordinary rubber will quickly harden and crack under such alternating temperature extremes, eventually losing its sealing function. However, specially formulated silicone seals can maintain soft compressive resilience over long periods in such environments. When a bolt is tightened, the silicone O-ring or gasket actively fills in the microscopic unevenness of the metal surfaces, forming a barrier hundreds of times denser than a human hair. Whether it is fuel, coolant, or high vacuum, nothing can penetrate.
